Please describe what is delivered to the target cohort?
The program comprises separate groups for the children and one of their parents/carers, which is run concurrently, then followed by a combined parent/carer-child interaction group, plus meetings for partners or support persons, and meetings for teachers.
The children’s group focuses on teaching anger management, pro-social skills, perspective taking, conversation skills, problem-solving, affect, recognition, assertion skills, decision-making, and social perception.
The parent/carer group aims to increase parents/carers' understanding of factors underlying their children’s behaviour, challenge unhelpful beliefs, teach behaviour management skills, deal with parenting and relationship issues, recognise parents/carers’ strengths and foster use of their own resources.
The combined parent/carer-child interaction group aims to address parent-child relationship issues, encourage positive parent/carer-child interaction, teach problem solving and conflict resolution, and teach direct and clear communication.
Partner/support person evenings are attended by both parents/carers or by the attending parent/carer and a support person. The focus is on adults working together and supporting each other in disciplining and nurturing their child.
Teachers' Meetings aim to promote a consistent approach in how to manage, support and nurture children.
What is the recommended intensity for each of the target cohorts?
The Exploring Together program involves six to eight families participating in ten consecutive weeks of group work, plus pre-group and post-group family interviews for assessment, evaluation and feedback. Group work consists of separate groups for children and parents/carers, followed by a combined parent/carer-child group. Meetings with the partners/support persons of the parent/carer attending the group take place twice during the 10 week program. Leaders also meet with the children's teachers on two occasions during this period. Four leaders are required to run each program (two for the children's group and two for the parents/carers' group). At least one of the leaders from each group must have attended Exploring Together Training. The time commitment for each leader is at least three hours per week. This includes preparation time, group time, post-group debriefing and planning.
Below is a breakdown of the number of leaders needed and the timing for each session:
- Children's group - 2 leaders / 1 hour.
- Parents' group - 2 leaders / 1 hour.
- Combined group - 4 leaders / 45 minutes.
Over what period does the target cohort participate?
The total commitment, including pre-group meeting, group sessions, partner/support person meetings and feedback meetings, is 24 hours.
Two interview rooms are required. One room must be large enough to accommodate all parents/carers and the children attending the group plus the four facilitators. e.g. for a group of eight families a room large enough for 20 people is required.
A whiteboard and markers are useful for the parents/carers' group.
